Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition 

The Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition (IHMCTAN), Dadar, is better known as IHM or Dadar Catering College or simply Cat Coll.

Located at the heart of Mumbai, the Institute is a stone's throw away from the Dadar Beach and Shivaji Park and in close proximity of the Siddhi Vinayak Mandir and the historic Portuguese Church. It is also a landmark by itself. Its growth from its inception has been quite spectacular and today it is rated as one of the premier Institutes in the sub continent.

The Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai, the first of its kind in South East Asia was founded in the year 1954 by the All India Women’s Central Food Council under the leadership of Late Lilavati Munshi. There were six students when classes commenced in 1954 at Bhavan’s College Campus, Andheri. In 1956, the late Belfield Smith, one of the founder members of the Hotel Catering and Institutional Management Association, U.K. took over as the Principal of the Institute from the Late P C Rajpal and in 1958 the Three Year Diploma Programme in Hotel Management & Catering Technology was started, recognized by the Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra State. Quite ironically the student body comprised largely of men. Continuous growth enabled the Institute to shift to its own separate campus in Dadar built on land leased by the State Government. With Thangam E. Philip at the helm, the Institute grew by leaps and bounds with funds coming in from the State and Central Governments until the Central Government took over the total financial responsibility of theInstitute in 1979. Infact Thangam Philip is credited with making the Institute what it is, till date.

Today, the Institute is a part of the National Council, a specialist body,conducting examinations and conferring recognition and acredition of professional merit, in the field of Hotel Management, under the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. The Council has on its Board, Governors/representatives of the Ministries/Departments of Food, Labour, Tourism, Education and Finance. It also has representatives of the Hotel Industry, Experts, Professionals and Educationalists.

The Institute has 180 seats for its Three-year Diploma course, which is the highest in the country and the most sought after too. IHM also conducts over 10 other courses and training over a thousand young people annually. The courses range from the Three-Year Diploma Course in Hotel Management and the Post Diploma Course in Accommodation Operation & Management to a course in Dietetics. It conducts craftsmanship courses in Food Production & Patisserie, which is one and a half-years in duration and a certificate courses in Food & Beverage Service and Hotel Management of six months duration each.

In keeping with its objectives of planning a progressive education training scheme and to impart through training both practical, theoretical and thorough knowledge of every phase of Hotel, Catering and Institutional management, the Institute has some of the best and the most modern facilities like training kitchens, basic, quantity and advanced, canning and preservation and biochemistry labs, training restaurants, front office and computer labs, audio visual room, maintenance workshop, 200 seater library, hostel facilities for 265 students, both boys and girls and a 3-star level Applied Training Centre (ATC) with 40 rooms.

The Institute also has cultural activities and celebration of various festivals such as Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi and Christmas with traditional meals which gives students an insight into the culture and cuisine of different parts of the country and Annual theme dinners which are organised and managed by the final year students which not only develops their entrepreneurial skills and the art of commercial theme dinner management but also gives them "hands on" learning experience. During these theme dinners along with the focus on the food and beverage service and cuisine, there is an emphasis on making the food, drinks and the ambiance as authentic as possible. Students of the Institute are also debuted to various four star and five star hotels during the Christmas and New Year Season enabling them to put their learning into practice.

Keeping up the tradition of catering to ever changing needs, the diplomacourse in all probability will be soon converted into a degree course. The Institute is in the process of finalizing further ambitious projects like a Research & Development Centre and a state of the art Auditorium but the Institute's maxim, "Enter to learn, Go forth to serve, and serve with pleasure one and all" continues to underline all the objectives and the activities undertaken.
