The Aavishkar Centre for Self Enrichment aims to enrich your life and that of your child by addressing certain key issues: Effective Study Habits, Preparing for Exams, Teenage Traumas, All-round Development and Helpful Parenting.

Parents spend many an anxious moment worrying about their children's future - exams, percentages, teenage trauma, behaviour, career, etc. No universal formula exists for bringing up children. But children do need a certain amount of guidance and direction to build their self-esteem, and to help them cope with the pressures and difficulties they are bound to experience.

The Aavishkar Centre for Self Enrichment at Dadar helps both parents and children grow into better individuals and develop quality relationships. The Centre focusses on key issues like Effective Study Habits, Preparing for Exams, Teenage Traumas, All-round Development and Helpful Parenting.

"We all want our children to do well, but do they have the skills to do so? Effective Study Habits can help motivate students and provide them with skills to enhance their performance," says Archana Samarth, Clinical Psychologist, Aavishkar Centre For Self Enrichment.

  • Preparing for examsPreparing for exams causes lots of anxiety for both parent and child. The Centre conducts one-day workshops for students and parents. The topics covered during a 4-hour session for students are: developing the right attitude, memory skills, exercises and yogasanas to improve concentration, and exercises in visualisation and relaxation. The 2-hour session for parents discusses dealing with their own as well as their child's anxiety and playing a supportive role.

  • Challenges, distractions and anxiety are part of teenage years. Understanding the problems of growing up, dealing with peer-pressure, effective time management, learning to develop satisfying relationships, importance of healthy habits, learning to be assertive, decision-making, public speaking, controlling anger and other negative emotions, and developing a positive mental attitude are some of the aspects the centre deals with.

  • Every parent wants his or her child to be a sure 'winner.' Aavishkar conducts workshops to teach skills essential for all-round development of a child such as developing a positive mental attitude, becoming aware of one's potential and enriching it, learning to use time effectively, learning to deal with academic pressures, improving memory and concentration skills, cultivating healthy habits, decision making, overcoming shyness, learning to deal with peer-pressure, maintaining healthy relationships with parents and teachers, and understanding and learning to cope with problems of growing up

Distraction: When you are distracted by thoughts of play, television, etc, try to analyse, "If I study now, I can enjoy my summer holidays without worrying about my results." Don't think about how much you will score. Just study with concentration.

Concentration: If poor concentration is your problem, first close your eyes, take slow deep breaths and with every breath, repeat in your mind, "I am concentrating and nothing is disturbing me." Repeat this five to ten times. Do this exercise whenever you sit down to study, before opening your books.

Tension: As you get closer to the examination day, you may feel as if you don't remember anything that you have read and studied. This is a normal feeling, but remember, what you have understood and memorised cannot just get erased from your brain. Take a deep breath, calm yourself and then start recalling.

Mental Preparation: Before going to bed every night and before starting your studies every morning, close your eyes and imagine yourself writing your exams with confidence. Imagine that you remember everything you have studied and feel satisfied with the way you wrote your paper. This exercise will help you to mentally prepare yourself for exams.

Physical Preparation: Remember, during exams your brain needs a lot of energy. So sleep for 7-8 hours and eat well. You do not want to be tired and anxious during exams. Eat a lot of fruits and drink a lot of water or juices and not soft drinks, tea or coffee.
